A quick search online will turn up seemingly cheap offers. A tandem jump is relatively straightforward to cost out – the biggest expense is the flight, followed by equipment depreciation, the tandem instructor’s fee, and site/staffing costs. The five most common tricks in budget offers:

1. Reduced exit altitude: These jumps are usually from only 2,500 m instead of the standard 4,000 m. You lose around 30 seconds of freefall.
2. Weekday restrictions: Many cheap prices are only valid Monday to Friday.
3. Shortened voucher validity: Some providers limit vouchers to 1 year or charge extra from the 2nd year.
4. Fuel surcharge: Since the rise in fuel prices, some providers charge a “kerosene surcharge” on site.
5. Expensive video/photo: Around 80% of customers opt for a video. Since the jump price is subsidised this way, video prices are often significantly higher.

Our tip: always compare the price of a 4,000 m jump at the weekend including a handcam video. That shows who is genuinely good value.
